Natural wine: authenticity, terroir, and commitment

“Natural wines” embrace minimal intervention: hand-harvesting, organic grapes (or in conversion), spontaneous fermentation, no additives, and minimal or no sulfites. Certification offers clarity in this often loosely regulated area.

Two key French certifications:

Vin Méthode Nature, recognized by INAO, enforces strict standards: organic fruit, native yeast fermentation, no filtration or harsh techniques, and sulfites below 30 mg/L. Two labels distinguish wines with or without added sulfites.

Others like VinNatur or the Syndicat de Défense des Vins Naturels offer similar standards but lack institutional recognition.

🌱 For consumers, these certifications guarantee transparency and a true natural expression of terroir.

🌱 For wine, ‘natural’ certification is a strong added value. It speaks of a living wine, artisanal expertise, and a unique taste aesthetic — all elements sought after by a new generation of wine lovers.

🌱 For winemakers, adhering to these standards requires precision and traceability, yet rewards their unique, high-value craftsmanship.

Clear, audited standards help separate genuine natural practices from marketing claims.
