Cairanne: a dynamic Rhône cru slowed by regulatory inertia

Despite a challenging environment, the Cairanne AOC, elevated to cru status in 2016, remains solid—yet its white wine potential is stalled by overly strict AOP specifications.
Appellation president Laurent Brusset warns: “We’re missing the white wine momentum.” A request to modify the rulebook was submitted to INAO in November 2023, but no progress has followed—highlighting a gap between field needs and institutional sluggishness.
🎯 A wake-up call for the AOP system as IGP and Vin de France labels grow through flexibility and responsiveness.
