Understanding the impact of high temperatures on grapes

Heat plays a fundamental role in the vine’s life cycle. It promotes photosynthesis, accelerates ripening and enables the development of sugars in the grapes. But when it becomes excessive, its impact can profoundly alter the balance of the wine.

High temperatures accelerate sugar concentration, naturally increasing the future alcohol content. At the same time, they can cause a drop in acidity, which is essential for freshness and flavour balance.

Water stress, often associated with periods of intense heat, can also reduce yields and further concentrate the aromas and polyphenols. The result: wines that are often more powerful, richer and, at times, more sun-kissed.

In the face of climate change, winegrowers are adapting their practices: foliage management, soil cultivation, sustainable irrigation and the selection of more resilient grape varieties are becoming key strategies.
