Iconic to Châteauneuf-du-Pape, round pebbles play a key role in the vineyard’s balance. Formed from ancient alluvial deposits of the Rhône, these stones absorb the sun’s heat during the day and release it slowly at night.
This phenomenon acts as a natural thermal regulator, promoting uniform ripening of the grapes, particularly during cooler spells or towards the end of the growing season.
The pebbles also help to limit water evaporation by protecting the soil, whilst promoting drainage during heavy rainfall. Beneath this mineral layer, the roots delve deep to seek out water and nutrients, strengthening the vines’ resilience.
